Jacksonville’s divorce rates continue to decline year after year

Divorce rates in Duval County declined by 28 percent between 2015 and 2017. This significant reduction in couples calling it quits in greater Jacksonville has resulted in other Florida city leaders asking what their magic potion is.

Researchers with Live to Life have recently looked into it. What the religious nonprofit’s researchers determined is that it may have something to do with grassroots efforts to strengthen marriages.

Another study, carried out by the Florida Center for Prevention Research at Florida State University (FSU) found that divorce rates in Duval County may actually be lower than what they were originally anticipated to be. They found that, as of 2017, Jacksonville’s divorce rate was only 2.95 per 1,000 residents. It was 3.3 in 2016 and 4.1 in 2015.

This, too, has left FSU researchers wondering what makes Jacksonville so unique from other Florida cities. They are only experiencing at most a two-tenths decrease in divorce rates each year.

Initially, they attributed this decline to couples dating longer before getting married or waiting until they’re of a more advanced age. They also cited a reduction in military deployments and improvements with the national economy as reasons for the decrease. They then dug deeper into the role of therapists and nonprofits on this front.

They found that there are some 800 or more faith-based organizations that offer marital support in the city. There are also more than 860 marriage therapists or clinical social workers who operate in the area too.

There are a variety of reasons that couples ultimately decide to throw in the towel on their marriages. It’s unlikely that grassroots programs and therapist can save every relationship. If you are intent on splitting up with your spouse, then you’ll want to consult with a Kissimmee divorce attorney who can help you sort through your emotional, child custody and economic affairs with you.
