When you are going through a divorce, you need to decide how you are going to handle the matters. You have to think about child custody, property division and other issues.
There are two options that you have when you are going through a divorce. You can work with your ex to come up with the terms of the divorce, or you can turn to the court to come up with the terms. If you choose to work things out, keep these points in mind.
What steps should I take leading up to discussions about the terms?
First, remember that you and your ex aren't a team any longer. You must handle everything in your best interests. This means retaining a lawyer who can protect your interests and thinking twice about everything your ex claims. Even if you and your ex are divorcing on good terms, your ex must also still protect his or her own interests.
When should I try to work things out?
Early mediation is usually best. This lets you and your ex decide on the terms of the divorce without trying to rush through it. Without having to hurry through the mediation, you and your ex are much more likely going to be able to reach accord. Consider how each decision will impact your and your children's lives.
You have to make sure that you go into every proceeding or meeting prepared for what is going to occur. When you are going through a divorce, the decisions you make now will have an impact on your new life.
